Your Body Has a Favourite Chair. It Probably Hates You.

We all have that chair.

The one at home where you spend hours watching Netflix, scrolling your phone, working on your laptop, eating snacks, talking to friends—or doing absolutely nothing.

It may be your sofa. Your bed. A particular dining chair. That one corner of the couch that somehow fits your body perfectly.

And every time you sit there, your body says:

“Ah. Finally.”

Unfortunately, your spine may have a different opinion.

Comfort Isn’t Always Good for You

One of the strange things about the human body is that it doesn’t necessarily reward us for being comfortable.

A position can feel comfortable while still placing stress on your muscles, joints and spine.

Think about what happens when you sit for a long time:

  • Your hips remain bent for hours.
  • Your back stays in roughly the same position.
  • Your neck may lean forward toward a screen.
  • Your shoulders gradually round forward.
  • Your muscles don’t have to do much work.

Nothing feels wrong initially.

Then you stand up.

“Why does my back feel 70 years old?”

That’s the problem with prolonged sitting. Your body isn’t designed to stay in one position for hours at a time—even if that position feels fantastic.

The Real Problem May Not Be Your Posture

We’ve all heard:

“Sit straight.”

But posture isn’t necessarily the villain.

A perfectly straight posture maintained for three hours isn’t particularly helpful either.

Your body generally prefers movement and variation.

Sitting upright, slouching slightly, leaning back, standing, walking around, stretching and changing positions throughout the day can be more useful than obsessing over maintaining one “perfect” posture.

In other words:

The best posture may be your next posture.

Your Phone Has Changed How You Move

There is another interesting problem hiding in our daily routines.

We don’t just sit anymore.

We sit while looking down.

We walk while looking down.

We lie in bed while looking down.

We wait for the elevator while looking down.

We even go to the bathroom while looking down.

Our phones have quietly turned our necks into full-time screen stands.

The occasional use isn’t the issue. The problem is spending hours in the same position without giving your body a break.

That’s why small habits can matter surprisingly much.

Try the “One Song Rule”

Here’s a simple experiment.

Every time you sit for a long period, set a rule:

After every few songs, get up for the length of one song.

Walk around the room.

Get some water.

Stretch.

Look outside the window.

Do a few gentle movements.

You don’t need a complicated exercise routine.

You simply need to remind your body:

“We’re not furniture.”

And This Isn’t Just About Back Pain

Movement affects much more than your spine.

Regular movement throughout the day can support:

  • Joint mobility
  • Muscle function
  • Balance and coordination
  • Flexibility
  • Work tolerance
  • Functional independence
  • Everyday comfort

For children, movement is also closely connected with development, coordination and participation in daily activities.

For older adults, maintaining strength, balance and mobility can make an enormous difference to independence and confidence.

For people recovering from an injury or surgery, the right movement—introduced at the right stage—can be an important part of rehabilitation.

Maybe Your Chair Isn’t the Problem

Before you throw away your favourite chair, there’s good news.

You don’t necessarily need a standing desk.

You don’t need an expensive ergonomic chair.

You don’t need to spend an hour stretching every morning.

And you definitely don’t need to feel guilty every time you sit down.

Instead, start paying attention to how long you stay in one position.

Move more often.

Change positions.

Take short walking breaks.

Make your workspace comfortable.

And if pain keeps returning despite these changes, don’t simply assume that you need to “sit straighter.”

Sometimes recurring pain deserves a proper assessment.

Your Body Is Built to Move

At Holistic Touch Clinic, we look beyond a single painful area.

Whether you’re dealing with back pain, a sports injury, difficulty with movement, recovery after surgery, challenges with daily activities, or developmental concerns in a child, rehabilitation is ultimately about helping you move and participate in life better.

Because the goal isn’t to spend your entire life sitting perfectly.

It’s to be able to get up from your favourite chair and actually enjoy what comes next.

Your chair can stay comfortable.

Just don’t let it become your permanent address.
